What causes lines & wrinkles?

There are many factors contributing to facial lines and wrinkles. First and foremost they are considered a natural part of the ageing process. The science of the skin (dermis) may be thought of as a lifecycle, during which changes occur in its volume, elasticity and in its hydration abilities.

Aside from ageing, lifestyle choices such as smoking and drinking alcohol contribute towards the formation of some lines and wrinkles as does diet, stress, exposure to sunlight and even the way we sleep too.

How can I reduce lines & wrinkles?

There is a wide range of treatment options to effectively treat lines and wrinkles. Each has its own merits. Often, the most effective treatments are those that directly address the cause, not just the symptoms, especially those skin treatments which also nurture the skin’s health and well being. For example, where the cause of wrinkles are muscular contractions then we can address this with the neurotxin BOTOX®. If volume loss is a factor then dermal fillers will be more appropriate and if skin tissues have sagged or repositioned then neither BOTOX® nor dermal fillers would be appropriate. For sagging tissues or folds with repositioned skin tissues then PDO thread lifts are the perhaps the most appropriate treatmetn option.

How can I treat deeper lines & folds?

Under the skin’s surface lies the dermis and sub cutaneous tissue. Collagen and elastin fibres as well as hyaluronic acid are found naturally within these layers. A reduction in the density of these layers caused by loss of collagen or hyaluronic acid leads to the characteristic deep folds, poorly hydrated, ageing skin and sagging cheeks and jowls.

Deep lines and folds can be treated by replacing the lost hyaluronic acid or collagen in the dermis. There are several dermal fillers on the market to replace lost volume, rehydrate, refresh and revitalise ageing skin. Often where folds are apparent the skin tissues will also sag, effectively collecting on top the fold. These sagging tissues are much more effectively treated by lifting rather than filling and, by far the most effective way to lift these tissues is with a PDO thread lift.
