Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive (hyper) sweating (hidrosis) It is characterised by abnormal levels of perspiration at particular areas of the body. The most common areas for hyperhidrosis are the underarm, forehead, palm of hand and sole of foot.

Hyperhidrosis should not be confused with normal perspiration considered biologically necessary to cool the body. Instead, hyperhidrosis is perspiration that has no bodily cooling function. It is considered ‘excessive’ as the body may sweat whilst at rest and therefore at normal temperature. Hyperhidrosis is largely unexplained in individual cases. In addition, it often occurs without warning and may not follow any particular pattern of recurrence.

Hyperhidrosis and self esteem

Hyperhidrosis can have an almost chronic effect on the lives of some people. From mere inconvenience to embarrassment, lack of self confidence and low self esteem hyperhidrosis has far reaching implications at a personal level. For some people hyperhidrosis may dictate the social, professional and intimate boundaries by which one lives, preventing him or her from making normal progress and getting the best out of life.

Occurrence of hyerhidrosis is equal amongst men and women. It may affect anyone regardless of lifestyle, career or social paths. Fortunately, medical treatment with BOTOX® is both highly effective and extremely well tolerated amongst the general public.

Treatment for hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis can be effectively treated with a series of BOTOX® (botulinum toxin) injections, given at intervals across the affected area. The number of injections varies according to the area of treatment.

How effective is treatment?

A single course of BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin type A) treatment will effectively block all perspiration to the treated area for a period of 3-6 months. After this time perspiration will return to the area if further treatments are not taken. The actual time interval for the treatment will vary from person to person and will depend on several lifestyle, physical and metabolic factors.

Treatment options

Hyperhidrosis treatment with BOTOX® is available for underarm, hands, feet or forehead. Prices for a single treatment are £399 per area.
