What are nasolabial folds?

Nasolabial folds (also referred to as nasal lines/folds, nose to mouth lines) are facial lines that begin roughly at the outer corners of the nose, extending diagonally to the outer corners of the mouth. Their appearance is associated with smiling. In contrast to other, more superficial facial lines nasolabial folds are characterised by a deeper, more pronounced indent, which in certain cases may result in the appearance of a fold between cheek and nose to mouth areas.

As with other facial lines and wrinkles nasolabial folds become more prevalent with age, due in part to the changing volumes ans elasticity of the skin.

Treatment for nasolabial folds

Due to the nature of nasolabial folds they are normally treated with a series of dermal filler injections. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin at the point of the fold to soften its severity. The aim is to bring the depth of the fold as close to the adjacent skin surfaces as possible.

How will the results look?

Dermal fillers provide excellent, natural looking results. Many clients experience high satisfaction after just one treatment. Further treatments may be necessary to reach the desired effect. For more severe folds it is reasonable to expect a pleasant and natural softening of the fold, giving a more youthful appearance, particularly with additional treatments.

Treatment recommendations

Nasolabial folds may be treated alone or together with other areas as part of an anti ageing package. For those with visible mouth (marionette) lines it is recommended to treat these together with nasolabial folds.

Combining treatments for cheek augmentation with nasolabial folds works particularly well as the two are neighbouring areas. Softening of nasolabial folds further enhances the visible accentuation of the cheek.
