What are crows feet?

Crows feet are a series of upper facial lines or wrinkles that appear around the outside of the eyes and are associated with squinting. They are commonly referred to as crows feet due to formation of tangent lines from the eyes. Crows feet become more prevalent with age, due in part to the changing elasticity and densities of the skin.

What causes crows feet?

The most common cause of eye wrinkles such as crow’s feet are contractions of the orbicularis oculi muscle. These muscles are responsible for the closing of eyelids. Other factors which may cause lines to appear around the eyes are exposure to sunlight and sleep position.

Treatment for crows feet

Crows feet are normally treated with a series of BOTOX® injections. Botulinum toxin type A is injected into the skin causing local relaxation of the muscles responsible for the lines and wrinkles.

Treatment recommendations

It is recommended that crows feet are treated together with the other areas of the upper face: forehead lines and/or glabellar lines. Treatment of crows feet alone may accentuate the appearance of lines and wrinkles of neighbouring areas. Clients typically consider multiple upper facial areas as the best approach to anti ageing.
