Causes of lines & wrinkles
There are many factors contributing to facial lines and wrinkles. First and foremost they are considered a natural part of the ageing process. The science of the skin (dermis) may be thought of as a lifecycle, during which changes occur in its volume, elasticity and in its hydration abilities.
Aside from ageing, lifestyle choices such as smoking and drinking alcohol contribute towards the formation of some lines and wrinkles as does diet, stress, exposure to sunlight and even the way we sleep too.
Under the skin’s surface lies the dermis and sub cutaneous tissue. Collagen and elastin fibres as well as hyaluronic acid are found naturally within these layers. A reduction in the density of these layers caused by loss of collagen or hyaluronic acid leads to the characteristic deep folds, poorly hydrated, ageing skin and sagging cheeks and jowls.
Deep lines and folds can be treated by replacing the lost hyaluronic acid or collagen in the dermis. There are several dermal fillers on the market to replace lost volume, rehydrate, refresh and revitalise ageing skin.

Botulinum toxin type A (wrinkle relaxing injections) such as BOTOX® cosmetic are a highly effective way to combat the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. Unlike other anti ageing treatments that work on the skin BOTOX® works at the root of the problem by relaxing specific groups of muscles that are responsible for the creases, lines and wrinkles on the skin’s surface.
BOTOX® treatments will effectively relax muscles for approximately 3-4 months. A course of 3-4 treatments per year is recommended to maintain the wrinkle free appearance.
For deeper lines and folds and where muscles are not directly responsible for lines then dermal fillers are used. Typically, areas of the lower face such as the nasolabial folds and marionette lines are treated with dermal fillers to soften deep facial lines by replacing lost volume in the skin.
