What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a prescription only medicine (POM), manufactured only by Allergan inc. It is one of six FDA approved botulinum toxin type A drugs for cosmetic and medical use. Other well known brands include Xeomin, Bocouture, Azzalure and Dysport. In aesthetic medicine it is administered as a series of muscle relaxing injections to temporarily visually improve the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. The active ingredient in BOTOX® is botulinum toxin, a powerful neurotoxin and a purified protein derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinum.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® has many medical and cosmetic properties. In aesthetics it is injected into muscles at specific points to aid localised muscle relaxation. This process prevents nerve signals being received at the neuromuscular junction causing muscles to relax. Since muscle contractions are responsible for the visible lines and wrinkles on the skin’s surface these will become less apparent.

Muscle relaxing injections are commonly given to reduce lines and wrinkles of the 3 areas of the upper face – forehead, glabellar (frown lines between eyebrows) and crows feet (eye wrinkles). Other facial treatment areas include lips lines (perioral/smoker’s lines) and nose lines (bunny lines). BOTOX® is also given to lift, reshape, arch or level eyebrows (eyebrow lift).

How safe is BOTOX®?

The original Allergan BOTOX® gained FDA approval in cosmetic use over 20 years ago. It has an excellent safety record both for cosmetic and medical treatments. Other FDA approved botulinum toxins Bocouture® and Azzalure® are equally safe and effective in cosmetic use. However, Allergan BOTOX® is licensed for injection into the forehead, glabellar (frown) and crow’s feet (squint lines). Azzalure® by comparison is only licensed for injection in to the glabellar.

Ensuring safety for all clients across our entire range of treatments is the absolute priority of our clinic. We only use licensed, FDA approved brands and can guarantee that every treatment we perform is backed by leading independent medical aesthetics qualifications.

Are BOTOX® injections painful?

Pain and discomfort is kept to a minimum by use of a very fine needle. In addition, we employ very precise injecting techniques which further reduce discomfort still. Muscle relaxing injections are less uncomfortable than vaccinations which are administered with larger needles. Feedback from our clients, and in particular many first time clients suggests that most are pleasantly surprised by how painless the injections are.

Can I have BOTOX® injections on the day of consultation?

Regulations for nurse prescribers do not permit them to hold stocks of prescription medicines such as BOTOX® and BoCouture. It is necessary to consult face to face before a prescription can be obtained in the name of the client. Normally, this would mean administration at a separate appointment. However, for existing clients treatment can be given on the day as long as the practitioner has consulted with the client within the last 6 months.

Our practitioner is a qualified nurse prescriber whose prescribing qualification was gained purely in the field of aesthetic medicine and not from general practice. No doctor, dentist or surgeon holds this qualification.

What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

As with any drug there are possible side effects which you should be aware of. However, side effects of Botulinum toxin type A are rare in aesthetics. Even when they do occur they tend to be mild and clear within a short time. The most common side effects are swelling or mild discomfort at injection site, headache, tiredness and bruising. Where mild discomfort and/or bruising does occur this is most commonly attributable to the injection itself rather than the BOTOX® product.

What is a BOTOX® treatment area?

An example of a treatment area is:

• forehead lines (1)

• glabellar frown lines (2)

• crow’s feet (eye wrinkles) (3)

• nose lines (bunny lines) (4)

• lip lines (perioral – smoker’s lines) (5)

Other treatments

Eyebrow lift

An advanced BOTOX® treatment which can achieve eyebrow lift, brow levelling, shaping, arching and brow flicks (Nike tick). These treatments are administered as a series of muscle relaxing injections to modify the position or perspective of the eyebrow relative to that of the eye and forehead.
